BAFTA-nominated director makes local movie

Brentham Garden Suburb pride shines through

Chiswick has Bedford Park, but Ealing has its own, much less-known Garden Suburb that has just been immortalised in widescreen glory in a new DVD.

The 75-minute DVD. The Brentham Story' was commissioned by the Brentham Heritage Society , a small charity run by Brentham residents that aims to inform and educate people about the architectural heritage and special character of Brentham Garden Suburb in north Ealing.

12 months in the making, the DVD tells how Brentham started in 1901 as a house-building co-operative for working class people and an antidote to Victorian slums, and traces its development and social life through the 20th century to today when Brentham remains a strong community with many well-established traditions. One of these, the Brentham May Day celebrations celebrating its centenary this year - is one of many delightful sequences in the film, which also features information about planning and conservation issues.

The DVD is produced by Martin Mortimore Associates . Martin Mortimore is a freelance Producer/Director with many peak-time TV documentary credits, including the award-winning What the Romans Did For Us. He and his family have lived in Brentham for more than 30 years.

Ealing North MP Steve Pound, who appears in the DVD, said:

Brentham is one of the architectural jewels in Ealing's crown. It's also a very good place to live. Residents are proud of their environment and this shines through in the film.

Copies of the DVD are available from the Brentham Heritage Society, price £12 (details on www.brentham.com ), or from Pitshanger Bookshop, Pitshanger Lane , W5.
