A lecturer from the University of West London (UWL) is to feature in a new TV series which explores a number of curious deaths.

Forensic Science expert Dr Brian Hook will be uncovering facts behind the unexplained demise of drug lords and Hollywood stars as part of a new global crime drama series airing this week.

Crime and investigation programme, The Curious Life and Death of… brings in modern day investigative techniques to shed new light on a series of high profile deaths.

Exploring the lives and deaths of drug lord Pablo Escobar, Hollywood starlet Brittany Murphy, magician Harry Houdini, and Rolling Stones founder Brian Jones – Former Scotland Yard investigator, Brian joins presenter Dr Lindsey Fitzharris helping piece together the facts of each case.

As well as performing virtual autopsies, experimenting with blood samples and interviewing witnesses to reconstruct events, the team compares forensic techniques from then and now to offer an insight into crime and changing policing techniques.

Brian, who spent 30 years with the Metropolitan Police, also served as a forensic crime scene manager before taking up a teaching position at UWL in 2006.

Speaking about his latest on-screen project, he said: “I began seeking out unusual deaths or those with an element of uncertainty that could be re-examined using scientific investigative techniques and methods not available at the time.

“It is a very interesting concept and will appeal to anyone studying any investigative, forensic and criminology disciplines. We show just how far techniques have come and hope to inspire a new generation to take an interest in the processes and the impact this sort of work can have in criminal investigations.”
