The Reluctant Runner Runs.. (a Bit)

And wonders how come others make it look so easy?

So, did I get my new toy, my Garmin, working?

Well, yes, I did... eventually, but it wasn't that simple to start with and instead of logging my running, it was actually just registering my steps. Come to think of it, it was probably a tadge confused because most runners are usually faster than people who are walking aren't they? Oh well, George (as I shall henceforth call my Garmin) will get used to me and my er, 'gentle' running technique.

George takes a bit of time to connect to the GPS signal though, and this is slightly off putting because when I'm ready to go, I really need to get going. Any slight hiccup will quite easily send me back indoors again, a cuppa, comfy sofa and catching up on some great tv has far more of a pull than pounding the pavements of a chilly Ealing.

So, the bad bits first. Well after having had such a long spell of illness I felt unfit, heavy and oh so tired and I struggled, I really did. The first run was more of a run/walk affair, with that annoying voice in my head continually telling me to give-up.

I didn't though and managed a short circuit, but can't say I enjoyed it.

Another run a couple of days later wasn't a huge improvement but I went a tiny bit further (and we're really talking tiny). Another problem with George is that in my head I think I have done a longer distance, and then George shows me the reality - it can be rather disheartening for a novice.

I think I will have to ignore George and his statistics until I actually finish my run in future, as it'd be very easy for me to get the huff and end up taking the bus home.

Anyway ending on a more positive note (as I really am trying to be ++ instead of --) I completed my last run without having to stop AT ALL and it didn't feel quite as much torture as the two previous. I'm desperately hoping this is a sign that I'm improving.

It was a really lovely spring day and was so pleasant to be out in the fresh air, you know I might even do it again, maybe.

I just need to park this annoying voice telling me I really can't run, that I'm SO not a real runner and instead just go for it. A little bit is better than none at all - isn't that right?
