Get Your Skates on - Building Starts on New Park

And it should be ready just in time for when school's out

Work has begun to build the borough’s first 'state of the art' skate park and play area alongside Gurnell Leisure Centre.

Ealing Council’s planning committee has approved plans to build a £520,000 outdoor play area in time for the school summer holidays. The skateboarding park will be part of a range of outdoor sports apparatus being built for children of all ages to enjoy.

In addition to the council’s £400,000 investment, £120,000 has been awarded to the project by the Play Builder programme 2010/11 to create a multi use games area, create a new entrance to the site and make general improvements to the grounds.

Leader of the council, Councillor Julian Bell said: “This is an exciting project and the new development will give children of all ages an opportunity to get involved in all types of outdoor sports and activities. We hope the new park will give local people and visitors a lot of pleasure and the chance to try something new.”

Robin Weathersbee, father of keen skateboarder Henry age 10, said: “We can’t wait for the skate board park to be open to the public. Anything that gets kids off the sofa and into a park doing some exercise for free has to be a good thing. My son and I have been skate boarding for some years, but it’s never too late to learn. Skateboarding is fun and really gets your blood pumping. It’s great to know there will be a play area for anyone looking for something a little less energetic and there’s already a leisure centre and playground on site, so you’re spoilt for choice.”
