A blaze broke out in a flat above a Subway shop on Uxbridge Road on Thursday afternoon (18 December), drawing large crowds and forcing the closure of the busy road.

Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were dispatched to the terraced building, which contains shops with dwellings above. Crews from Ealing, Southall, Chiswick and Heston fire stations arrived after the first emergency call was received just before 3pm.

Most of a two-bedroom flat within the building’s mansard roof was damaged, though there were no reports of injuries. The fire was brought under control by 4:18pm.

Police have joined the London Fire Brigade in investigating the cause of the incident meaning that arson has not been ruled out.

The closure of Uxbridge Road caused significant disruption in the area as onlookers gathered near the cordon.
