A burnt out fridge. The Hanwell fire was caused by a tumble dryer
December 8, 2025
Firefighters have renewed warnings about the dangers posed by faulty household appliances after a blaze damaged a semi-detached home in Hanwell.
The fire broke out late on Friday 5 December at a property on Elthorne Park Road, with London Fire Brigade receiving the first of eight emergency calls at 23:13. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Ealing, Acton, Heston and Chiswick stations attended the scene. Crews brought the fire under control within half an hour but most of the property’s conservatory was left badly damaged. One man was treated at the scene by London Ambulance Service.
Investigators believe the fire was accidental, caused by a fault in a tumble dryer. A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said, “This incident serves as an important reminder to make sure that your white goods aren't a hidden fire hazard in your home. If your white goods start making strange noises, don’t ignore it. If you think there’s a problem always unplug it and contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair technician.”
The Brigade stressed that most fires linked to white goods are not the fault of the user, but urged residents to register their appliances so they can be alerted to any safety issues.
The incident has prompted renewed calls for vigilance, particularly during the winter months when household appliances are in frequent use.
