Queen of the Suburbs gets Greener

Green Party gains over 5,000 votes in Ealing

For the first time the Green Party contested all three parliamentary seats in Ealing and polled a total of 5,493 votes.

All green party candidates increased their share of the vote comapred with 2001. Geoff Burgess grabbed 5% of the vote in Acton and Shepherd's Bush and saved his deposit. Sarah Edwards nearly matched this in Southall with 4.6%, whilst  Alan Outten in Ealing North gained 2.9%.

Geoff Burgess said: " I was particularly delighted with the reaction of the young people I met during the campaign.   The other parties are frying the planet. Young people know we have to take action now."

Sarah Edwards said: "We picked up lots of support during the campaign and that will put us in a great position for the Council elections in 2006.

Alan Outten said: I'm delighted the Green party has played its part in saving Ealing's lime trees. Here at least the importance of the green agenda has been recognised.  We will make sure that green issues are right in the forefront of next year's local election campaign."

This success in Ealing follows a nationwide increase in the Green vote in every single seat bar one - that they stood in compared with the 2001 results.

The Green Party has polled over 280,000 votes at the General Election with a doubling of the vote share. In Brighton Pavilion greens gained 22% of the vote in that constituency taking third place and losing out narrowly to the Conservatives by just 2%. In Lewisham-Deptford, Green Party Candidates Cllr Darren Johnson increased the Green Party vote share from 6.5% to 11.1% narrowly missing out on third place to the Conservatives by just over 1% and second place to the Lib-Dems by just 6%.
