Victory For Smith in Ealing Central and Acton


Small majority back him for party leader but Brentford favour Corbyn

Ealing Central & Acton Labour Party members voted to endorse Owen Smith as leader - by a small majority.

Hundreds queued outside Ruskin Hall the Labour Party HQ in Acton to vote for the party leader.

88 supported Smith whilst 79 voted for Corbyn (with two spoiled papers) Local MP Rupa Huq had nominated Jeremy Corbyn as candidate in 2015, but supported Mr Smith on this occasion.

Meanwhile Brentford & Isleworth constituency Labour Party members voted by almost 2-1 in favour of retaining Jeremy Corbyn as leader.

The meeting in Hounslow, voted by 124 to 64 to support Jeremy Corbyn, handing a victory to the pro-Corbyn group, Momentum, against the wishes of the local MP Ruth Cadbury.

Momentum say that party membership has more than doubled under Jeremy Corbyn.

All ballots for members must be returned by Wednesday 21 September at midday.

The result will be announced at a Special Conference on Saturday 24 September in Liverpool. The election will conclude with a Leadership Conference on 24 September.
