Major Pipe Burst Leaves Homes Without Water

Rupture at Hampton leads to low pressure or total loss of supply

As many as 100,000 homes across West and South West London are either without water or have reduced mains pressure. The issue is a result of a 32-inch pipe bursting at the Hampton Water Treatment Works on Wednesday morning (12 June).

The affected areas include Brentford, Chiswick, Acton and Shepherd’s Bush.

A spokeswoman for Thames Water said: “We’ve had to shut off the pumps that pump the water out of the site, and that’s why some people will have no water at all and others will have water but at lower pressure.”

There was no risk of water contamination, the spokeswoman said.

Measures were being taken to reinstate supply while the pipe was being repaired, she said.

“It will obviously take time for the water to actually make its way through the network of pipes to people properties.

“We would still be looking at people being without water for some of the afternoon.”

Bottled water sites may be set up if water outages are expected to continue for a prolong period.

Chiswick library has also been temporarily closed today, due to the incident.

Hounslow council said: “In the meantime Beavers, Feltham, Heston and Hounslow libraries are all open today as usual, or you can re-new books online.”
