To celebrate International Women’s Day, on Wednesday 8 March a conference was held at Hounslow House, for third sector community group and residents.

Hounslow Council joined forces with Brentford FC Women’s First Team to host the event dubbed ‘#EmbraceEquity’ which has been selected to highlight the importance of collective activism, through challenging gender stereotypes, calling out discrimination, drawing attention to bias and seeking out inclusion.

Representatives from across the borough came together to discuss topics including gender Equality in Violence Against Women and Girls prevention, feminism in the South Asian communities and gender equity in the workplace and campaigns.

Speakers at the event include Councillor Shivraj Grewal, Cabinet Member for Communities and Equalities, Councillor Katherine Dunne, Deputy Leader of the Council, Mandy Skinner, Assistant Chief Executive for Hounslow Council, Sharon Evans (Afghan and Central Asian Association), Sayeeda Ashraf (Shewise), Naomi Hawthorne (Surviving Economic Abuse) and Kamaldip Kaur (Southall Black Sisters).

Molly Holmes, Brentford FC Women’s First Team captain, said, “I started at the Club when I was 17 and I have been able to witness the phenomenal growth of women’s football. It is such an amazing opportunity with the girls and women coming in, a great atmosphere where there is no judgement and knowing we are there to be heard and counted. International Women’s Day is crucial to highlight how far we have come and also an opportunity to inspire the next generation.”

Cllr Shivraj Grewal, Hounslow Council Cabinet Member for Communities and Equalities, said, “We are proud to have partnered with Brentford FC Women’s First Team on International Women’s Day. The progress in equality in women’s sport is great to see and the Lionesses’ have played a huge part in raising the profile of not only women in football but in sport in general. We are excited to have Lionesses’ play at the Brentford Gtech Community Stadium on 11 April, hopefully inspiring many more of our local young people.

“Forging gender equity is not limited to solely women; allies are incredibly important for the social, economic, cultural and political advancement of women too. Let us all work together to create a world without sexism, discrimination and gender-based violence.”
