Hotspots to be installed at local stations by end of 2012
Passengers using London Overground services, including the line from Clapham Junction to Willesden Junction, are to be provided with free access to WiFi while they wait for their trains.
The first 12 hotspots are to be installed at stations across the network by the end of the year, including Kensington Olympia, Shepherd’s Bush and Willesden Junction as well as West Hampstead, New Cross Gate, Forest Hill, West Croydon, Norwood Junction, Surrey Quays, Dalston, Wapping and Hackney Central.
Hotspots at other stations will follow and will offer passengers who register with the service free access to WiFi for 60 minutes per day.
"Access to the internet is no longer limited solely to home or to the workplace, and people’s expectation is to be able to work and communicate effectively and seamlessly while they’re on the move so we’re delighted to support this initiative which will bring reliable, free WiFi to London Overground’s customers," says Steve Murphy, Managing Director of London Overground Rail Operations.
The hotspots will be operated by The Cloud, a leading public WiFi provider owned by BSkyB. Users will need to register once to access the service.
The announcement follows a similar deal between London Underground and Virgin Media, which will see WiFi installed at 80 tube stations, extending to 120 by the end of the year.
The London Underground service will be free initially, but will become a pay-as-you-go service later. London Overground, however, said its hotspots would remain free to use.
