Ealing candlelit vigil held for Iraq dead

Demonstration being planned for advent of Fallujah assault

Anti-war campaigners staged a candlelit vigil in Ealing Broadway this week in remembrance of those killed in the current conflict in Iraq. The event was timed to coincide with the US presidential election and similar protests around the world.

Passers-by stopped to pay their respects to the civilian and military casualties of the invasion which some estimates put as high as 100,000. Flowers and candles were laid at the foot of a giant billboard which listed the names of 4,000 people who have been killed in the conflict.

Ealing Stop the War Coalition activist Thomas Wills said, "The military don't bother to keep count of the people they kill in Iraq. The names on the billboard have been collected by the website IraqBodyCount.net, and they are a fraction of all the people who have died. To list all those who have died would require 25 billboards like this one."

The protestors promised to continue to demand an end to the conflict and put as much pressure on politicians as possible. A demonstration is planned for 5pm- 7pm at Downing Street on the first day of the anticipated assault on Fallujah.
