Swap your clothes for new ones in time for the party season

Rummage through rails of pre-loved clothing, shoes and accessories at Ealing Council’s Christmas Glitz Swish being held at Ealing Town Hall on Wednesday, 26 November.

The free event will allow guests to swap good quality fashion items for old favourites brought in by others – an activity referred to as swishing.

Councillor Bassam Mahfouz, cabinet member for transport and environment said: “Swishing is just like shopping but without having to spend any money. For each item you bring to the event, you get to take home something new.”

“Swishing extends the life of clothes and accessories, increasing value for money and reducing the impact of textiles ending up in landfill. According to research, an average of 30% of clothes in households, equating to roughly 1.7billion items, are not worn over the course of a year. That’s a startling figure.”

“We all have clothes, shoes or accessories that are in great condition sitting somewhere at home not being used. The Christmas Glitz Swish is the perfect opportunity to put those pre-loved items to good use, and you get to walk away with something new for yourself just in time for the festive season which is now upon us.”

The Christmas Glitz Swish will be held on Wednesday, 26 November in the Elizabeth Cantell Room at Ealing Town Hall between 12-6.30pm.

To gain entry to the event, guests are required to bring at least one item of clothing, pair of shoes or accessories that is still in good condition which they will then be able to swap for another.

Ealing local, Debbie Penney from Sew What? Café, will also be available on the day to offer advice on how to upcycle clothes to give wardrobes a fresh new look and how to embellish or repair clothes.

Debbie said: “You may have a piece of clothing that you love but just can’t wear anymore. Bring that along to the event as well and I can show you how to alter the style and shape or glam it up.”

Residents are reminded that clothing and shoes can also be recycled through the many textile banks located across the borough or as part of their weekly recycling collection. Items, enclosed within bags to keep them dry, should be placed in the green recycling boxes.
