Howard Brenton's play to be presented on Mattock Lane
In the summer of 1816 the Romantic poets Shelley and Byron, both fleeing scandal in England, meet in Switzerland. The summer is marked by sexual liaisons, fiery conflict, and the birth of a new literary creation, Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein.
Howard Brenton's swirling, lyrical and darkly funny play follows the emotional turbulence through the scandals until Shelley's untimely death by drowning in Italy in 1822.
