Books on Broadway

Renowned authors talk about their inspirations and the practicalities of publication

Ealing Council's Library and Information Service has secured another fantastic line-up of authors for the next instalment of its popular 'Books on Broadway' series.

The series offers a variety of authors from renowned writers, to up-and-coming names in the literary world. They'll be talking of their work, the inspirations behind it and the practicalities of publishing it.

Kicking things off on Monday 6 February is 'Write Fantastic', which will focus on the literary appeal of myth and magic. Sarah Ash, Chaz Brenchley, Mark Chadbourn, Juliet E. McKenna, Stan Nicholls, James Barker and Jessica Rydill are a group of writers, specialising in fantasy fiction. With a number of books published between them, this talk is a great opportunity to hear tales of orcs, dragons, swords and sorcery.

Next up on Monday 6 March is Ben Markovits. Originally from Texas and a former pro basketball player, Ben now lives in London and writes for the London Review of Books and the Times Literary Supplement. His latest novel, Either Side of Winter', captures a city in microcosm through a series of remarkable character portraits.

The grand finale of this series on Monday 27 March brings Bettany Hughes to Ealing. Widely acknowledged as the best of the new generation of TV historians, Bettany has presented Channel 4 programmes on the Spartans and the Minoans as well as The Seven Ages of Britain a social history from the Ice Age to the Industrial Revolution. Her latest book on Helen of Troy has received great acclaim and was recently adapted for primetime viewing.

Cabinet member for leisure, sport and culture Councillor Jasbir Anand said: "Ealing is in for a real treat with these events, which are a continuation of the Books on Broadway series. I am particularly looking forward to hearing from the immensely talented Bettany Hughes, who has, more than anyone else recently, made learning about our past an exciting and engaging experience."

All sessions will take place at Ealing Central Library (103 Broadway Centre , W5 5JY ) at 7pm, with the doors opening at 6.45pm.

Tickets for each evening are £5 (£4 concessions*), and include refreshments. Tickets are available in advance from the Enquiries Desk in Central Library or by calling 020 8825 5600. The council is running a special offer of a 10% discount for people booking all three events.
