Election 2017: Ealing Central and Acton Candidate Profile

Joy Morrissey will be fighting the seat for the Conservatives

Ealing Central and Acton will be one of the most hotly contested seats in the forthcoming election and with candidates now all declared the choice in this seat is between Labour, Conservative and Liberal Democrats.

We have asked each candidate to write their personal manifesto.

Joy Morrissey will be fighting the seat for the Conservatives.

My life-long belief and that every person deserves a fair deal in life and my commitment to do what I can to work towards achieving this.

If elected I will be a strong voice championing the best interests for our community. As your Conservative Member of Parliament,I will be ideally placed to ensure your voice is heard.

I will represent all Ealing and Acton constituents - whichever way you vote.

I have worked in crisis zones across the world on humanitarian aid and I currently work at the Centre for Social Justice. I want to be a voice for everyone, no matter their background. I promise to always be accessible and to always try to help. I guarantee I will work tirelessly to listen to your priorities and to do everything within my power to champion your causes.

I played an instrumental part in saving the Solace Centre in Ealing, a mental health facility that Labour were determined to close. This is an area I am passionate about.

I am proud to be your local candidate for a party committed to tackling discrimination of vulnerable people and protecting those suffering discrimination at work, who are suffering with mental health issues.

Our Conservative Government has committed to investing in 10,000 more NHS mental health staff by 2020, this also means an increase in mental health funding by £1.4 billion in real terms by 2020. I am pleased that Theresa May has committed a Conservative Government to investing more in healthcare.

If you elect me as your Member of Parliament for Ealing Central and Acton, I will fight to secure even more funding for our local health services and I promise to ensure the concerns of residents is always my number one priority. Ealing hospital will not be closing – contrary to the lies being spun by the local Labour and Liberal Democrat spin machines.

A good education can be the single greatest transformer of lives. I am committed to ensuring education and training is properly funded in Ealing and I will work tirelessly to ensure Ealing and Acton gets a fair deal from the Education funding formula. I also want to ensure that there are plenty of opportunities for our young adults in further education, to give them the best start in the adult life for a long and successful career. Apprenticeships provide a fantastic opportunity for young people to get on in life, earning and learning, I want to see them become the norm for the young and ambitious, and also for employers recruiting locally.

There are a record number of teachers in classrooms, but still not enough. The Conservative Government have already put in place a £67 million package to improve recruitment with generous training scholarships and bursaries. This work never has an end date.

I live in Ealing with my husband and young daughter, I understand the strains on our local services and infrastructure as we rely on them every day. As a Conservative Member of Parliament, I will be a strong voice in fighting to ensure our local services are protected, and ensuring our infrastructure gets the right investment it needs.

I want everyone to have the opportunity to step onto the housing ladder and so I welcome Theresa May’s commitment to a starter homes programme. It's important we provide help for that vital first step on the ladder which is doubly hard to do in London.

The previous Labour government left this country with a housing crisis. 2010 saw the lowest levels of housebuilding since the 1920s and the number of people on social housing waiting lists had doubled to 1.8 million. Significant progress is being made to improve this situation but more needs to be done and a Conservative government knows this is high priority.

I believe in local people having a strong voice on planning and development in their neighbourhood, which is why I have been heavily involved in the campaign to save and protect Ealing Broadway. The Broadway has a rich Victorian architectural heritage that should be protected. I will continue to fight for regeneration to be sympathetic and in keeping with local sympathies and needs.

On the doorsteps, residents have raised how worried they are about air pollution and the effect it has on their health. I recently spoke to Andrea Leadsom, Secretary of State for the Environment, about this, outlining how damaging poor air quality is to the lives of those affected. I was delighted to see just days later the draft plans for drastic action on this issue. If elected I will fight to ensure that Ealing and Acton is a healthy and prosperous place to live and work.

A vote for me gives you a clear and distinct voice in Parliament championing your priorities within the governing party - and putting you first.

This General Election could not have come at a more important time for our country. We face huge changes and it is in all our best interests to make sure that our Prime Minister gets the best deal for the UK in the Brexit negotiations. I believe the only person who can do that is Theresa May and I am committed to support her while always ensuring I fight to get the best deal for Ealing Central and Acton.

I would be honoured to represent the people of Ealing and Acton in Parliament. I’m asking for you to give me the opportunity and to give me your vote.
