But Labour's Onkar Sahota ousts Deputy Mayor Richard Barnes

Boris Johnson has been re-elected as London Mayor, beating Ken Livingstone by a margin of 3%.

The announcement was made just before midnight, after a count that lasted more than twenty-five hours. The overall result was 1,054,811 votes for Boris Johnson while the final number of votes for Ken Livingstone was 992,273.

Tony Travers of the London School of Economics said that Boris had “ walked on water “ to win, considering the result of the Conservative party at national level.

Ken Livingstone said he would not run for election again.

Jenny Jones of the Green Party came third.

Meanwhile locally Dr Onkar Sahota took the Ealing and Hillingdon London Assembly seat from Deputy Mayor Richard Barnes - with a majority of over 3,000 votes.

The local GP, former magistrate and school governor has run a tireless campaign focussing on the threat to Ealing Hospital.

His petition against closure attracted over 10,000 signatures.

Speaking to the BBC, Dr Sahota, who was standing for his first elected office, said: "I am in touch with the feelings of the average people of London and my patients."

He said his election was a "clear message to the government that the policies that they have adopted are not acceptable to the people".

He said NHS funding had been the cornerstone of his election campaign.

Richard Barnes, the outgoing member has served the GLA for 12 years.
