Local team get through to Youth Games finals
Ealing’s young cricketers are heading to Lord’s.
The borough team, aged year 8 and under, topped Group C to qualify at the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games Indoor Cricket male qualifiers at the weekend.
They beat Enfield, Haringey and Lewisham in an impressive all-round display and can now look forward to the finals alongside seven other boroughs at Lord’s on Sunday 1 March.
In their crunch game against Lewisham, where a win for either team would book them a spot in the finals, they put on a mammoth total of 132 and disciplined bowling and fielding gave them a convincing win.
Team Manager Ollie Wilkin, himself a former London Youth Games competitor for Ealing, was delighted with the team’s performance:
“I think batting performances we always had one or two guys getting to the retiring stage and being able to come back in which helps and bowling wise I think we bowled nice and tightly all day and didn’t concede many boundaries which was key.”
Wilkin is confident of doing well at Lord’s.
Indoor Cricket is one of 31 sports in the 2015 Balfour Beatty London Youth Games. The London Youth Games is Europe’s largest annual youth sports event and is driving the legacy for increased participation in competitive sport and volunteering for young Londoners.
A record 126,897 young Londoners took part in the record-breaking 2014 Balfour Beatty London Youth Games, taking the event to over 1 million participants since it first launched in 1977.
