Ealing Council is reminding residents to recycle their real Christmas trees so they can be turned into compost instead of going to landfill.

The council will once more be picking up real Christmas trees from the doorstep in addition to the service already offered where residents can drop off used trees for recycling at the borough’s parks.

Residents can leave their Christmas tree – with all decorations removed - out for collection. There will be a free collection service provided with weekly refuse and recycling collections from Monday 31 December until Friday 18 January (at the front of the property, but not on the pavement where they can cause obstruction). If the tree is larger than 6ft in height or the trunk is more than 20cm in diameter, it needs to be cut in two for collection.

Residents can also take real Christmas trees of all shapes and sizes to a number of venues across the borough during the month of January, including many parks, open spaces and car parks – listed below. Trees collected from parks will be turned into compost.

The garden waste subscription collection service will not take place over the Christmas period from Monday, 24 December to Friday 18 January. The service will resume from Monday, 21 January.

The Re-use and Recycling centres accept all garden waste, including Christmas trees, for recycling. These centres are located at Stirling Road, Acton and Greenford Road, Greenford. Please note that the weighbridge at the Greenford centre closes at 3.30pm.

Councillor Bassam Mahfouz, cabinet member for Transport and Environment, said: “Getting a real Christmas tree can be really good for the environment and we want to support residents in making sure it’s easy to recycle it when Christmas is over and all the mince pies have been eaten. That’s why we will be continuing an Ealing Christmas tradition we started two years ago by collecting real trees from the front of your home as well as offering you the chance to take it to a number of parks and our recycling centres to have it turned into compost."
