Council warm-up appeal exceeded expectations

Residents and workers in Ealing have done themselves proud after donating hundreds of bags of clothes to help those in need.

More than 300 black sacks of garments have been donated during the Winter Warm-up 20-day appeal.

New items, with labels still attached, were left at the town hall, as was, a Paul Smith men’s designer coat that had been dry-cleaned before being donated. One particularly generous family from West Ealing delivered 12 bags of clothes to the appeal.

All the items collected have been distributed by local charities including St Mungo’s and Ealing Churches Winter Night Shelter.

Councillor Hitesh Tailor, cabinet member for housing, said: “There has been an amazing response to this appeal which is a credit to the community spirit in this borough. We are particularly pleased that the quality of clothes has been so high which will make all the difference in keeping people warm this winter.

“The number of items has exceeded all expectations. Thanks to the huge volume of clothes donated we have been able to approach other charities which will mean even more people will benefit.

“I would like to thank everyone who has donated as well as the charities involved who do such valuable work and are passing on these clothes to people who often struggle to keep warm over the winter months.”

Ealing Council has considered 30% more requests for help from people at risk of homelessness this year.

Local residents worried about losing their home and becoming homeless should contact the council’s housing advice service on 020 8825 8881.

Meanwhile Ealing Council Staff also donated toys and presents for 158 children who spent this Christmas in one of the borough’s hostels. A Christmas party was also arranged by the council’s hostels team.
