'Transport Borough of The Year'

Ealing scoops top award for best in London

More money for cycling, encouraging children to walk to school and a reduction in road accidents has made Ealing 2012 London 'Transport Borough of The Year" winner.

In an industry sponsored event, Ealing was shortlisted alongside neighbouring authorities Haringey and Brent but last night pipped them at the post taking the top prize.

Hosted by Scottish radio and television presenter Grant Stott, the awards saw over 400 transport professionals gather at the prestigious ceremony at the Park Plaza Riverbank Hotel, London.

Ealing, was last year’s winner of the National Transport Awards Most Improved Transport Authority.

This year, according to the Transport Times, the borough's 'high standard submission shows the comprehensive progress they are making across all key policy areas including road safety reduction, travel to school mode shift and cycling improvements.

''Investment in cycling has increased by 30% over the last three years to over £700,000 annually, walking and cycling to school has increased by almost 8%, and there has been a 5% reduction in road safety casualties.''

Peter Hendy OBE, Transport Commissioner, Transport for London said: “I am delighted to support these awards, which rightly celebrate the many achievements of the organisations which keep our city moving and growing, as we look forward to a great year for London and its transport network"
