Future of Streetwatchers Under Discussion
Ealing Council say there are no plans to stop the service
There are fears the Ealing's successful Streetwatchers' scheme could be under threat.
The volunteer army of hundreds of residents alert the Council on a daily basis to environmental issues in their neighbourhood like fly-tipping, abandoned vehicles and graffiti.
Registered members call a freephone number and report a number of other local problems including missed garden and general rubbish collections.
The scheme has been running for over ten years and, in 2008, was recognised at at the Cleaner, Safer, Greener Awards.
When Enterprise took over the borough's waste contract from May Gurney last year, complaints hit an all time high, and, although the initial teething problems were ironed out, the service still faces regular criticism.
Acton W3 forum members have been told the Streetwatchers' service is under review and could be reorganised.
At the next Council meeting (29th Jan), Conservative Councillor Phil Taylor, (shadow transport and environment) will raise the issue, highlighting the role of Streetwatchers.
His motion reads:
''This Council notes that the Council’s rubbish and recycling contractor has failed to meet the required service level for street cleaning for nine months.
''Answer to Council Written Questions has revealed that one quarter of the borough’s streets have been unacceptably dirty. The required standard is less than 5% of streets.
''This Council demands to know when the required service that residents pay for will be delivered.
''This Council recognises the immense value provided by the Streetwatchers and pledges to continue the service with its own management"
Acton W3.com asked for comment about any possible changes to the current scheme and a council spokesperson said:
"The council greatly appreciates the work of our volunteer streetwatchers and there are no plans to stop this valuable initiative. Discussions are taking place within the council about how the support for this service is provided but no final decisions have yet been taken."
