Ealing Parking Officers To Go On Strike

Union warn of likely 'widespread disruption on streets'

Parking officers in Ealing are likely to be going on strike in a union dispute over redundancies.

The workforce will take action for a week beginning on Friday 31 January with the strike ending on Thursday 7 February. The dispute erupted shortly before Christmas when Serco announced that there would be eight redundancies on the contract but all 60 workers would be at risk.

Unite, union say Serco refused to enter into collective consultation on the redundancies with them and warned that unless the company withdrew the redundancies and entered into negotiations it would be forced to ballot for industrial action. Unite members then voted by 100 per cent in favour of strike action.

The union has now secured talks with Serco but say if a resolution is not reached then not only will the strike go ahead but further action will be called.

Unite regional officer Clare Keogh said: “The strike action will make parking in Ealing a complete lottery and will undoubtedly cause widespread disruption on the borough’s streets.

“This strike is directly a result of the high handed and uncaring action of Serco.

“Strike action is always taken as a last resort and our members have been left with no option.

“Resolving this dispute is entirely in Serco’s hands, the company has have the opportunity at talks this week to remove the immediate threat of redundancies and finally to enter into meaningful negotiations to resolve this dispute.”

Terry Prince, Serco’s Parking Director, said -

“We have agreed to a collective consultation process with our employees on our Ealing parking contract and are in discussions with the union with the aim of resolving this dispute.”
