A short play shows how a group of friends are drawn into risky behaviour
March 16, 2026
An award-winning alcohol awareness production is returning to classrooms across Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls this week, aiming to give students a powerful and practical lesson in the risks of underage drinking.
‘Smashed Live’, created by Collingwood Learning and supported by Diageo, the school in Acton is one of ten in London it is visiting in London this week. The programme blends live theatre with interactive workshops, using realistic scenarios and relatable characters to help students understand the causes and consequences of underage drinking — and crucially, how to resist peer pressure. It is the second year in a row that the production has been staged at the local school.
Now in its 21st year, Smashed has reached more than 7.5 million young people in 38 countries, with Great Britain alone on track to surpass 600,000 students since its launch. Its impact has been widely recognised: this year the programme received the Global Drinks Intel ESG Award 2025 for Best Responsible Drinking/Alcohol Harm Reduction Initiative.
Research indicates that 87% of young people are less likely to drink underage after taking part, and 98% of teachers believe programmes like *Smashed* are vital in schools.
The production uses a short drama to show how a group of friends find themselves drawn into risky behaviour, followed by guided discussion and activities that help students reflect on choices, consequences and strategies for staying safe. The format is built on extensive consultation with young people and educators, ensuring the stories feel authentic and emotionally resonant.
For students who cannot attend the live event, the programme is also available as Smashed Online, a free interactive digital version accessible to schools and families.
Ian Smith, Corporate Relations Director at Diageo GB, said the programme’s continued success reflects its real ‑world impact, “We hope that the students we are visiting across London will not only gain valuable insights from the performances, but also leave better informed and prepared to make responsible choices about alcohol.”
Chris Simes, Managing Director of Collingwood Learning, added, “By combining live performance, discussion and digital learning, we’re helping students build the confidence and skills they need to make safe, informed choices.”
