Three local schools to be extended next term
Two schools in Hanwwell and one in Acton will have more pupils from September.
St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Hanwell, will permanently increase its intake by an extra 30 pupils. This will mean the school will have three classes of 30 children each year instead of two, eventually creating an extra 210 places.
Mayfield Primary, also in Hanwell, is a 1.5 form entry school and currently accepts 45 new reception pupils each year. It is scheduled to be completely rebuilt under the Government’s Priority School Building Programme. However, because this funding can only be used to rebuild a school of the same capacity, Ealing Council has agreed to make a contribution of £1.3million to allow a bigger school to be built. This will make it a two form entry school and create an additional 105 places when full.
The school will take a temporary class this September and next September to create extra spaces until the rebuild is completed.
It's hoped that pressures in Acton will be eased by adding another class at East Acton Primary for the third year in a row, taking it from a 1 form entry to a 2 form entry school.
Site constraints mean there is no room for temporary accommodation, so the existing building will be extended.
Councillor Binda Rai, cabinet member for children and young people, said:
''Ealing Council has a good track record of ensuring that every child is offered a school place and this latest round of expansions will help us to continue to meet that duty.
''Pressures on primary places are continuing and we received 240 more on-time applications this year compared to last. Despite this, 95% of on-time applicants were offered one of their top three schools and every applicant was offered a place. We are now offering places to late applicants and preparing for the spike in demand for high school places expected in 2016.”
The cost of extending the schools will be £7.05million
Children should start primary school in September 2014 if they were born between 1 September 2009 and 31 August 2010. Parents who have not applied for a reception place for their child should contact the council’s admissions service on 020 8825 5511 as their application is now late.
