Remembrance Day Plans in Ealing

Details of services throughout the borough

A two minute silence will be held on the steps of Ealing Town Hall to mark Armistice Day on Tuesday, 11 November at 11am.

Remembrance Sunday services and events will take place at war memorials across the borough on Sunday, 9 November. There will be a special focus this year on the 100-year anniversary of the start of the First World War (1914-18).

The British Legion will be marching to Greenford War Memorial on Greenford Broadway from its headquarters in Oldfield Lane South for a public service at 11am. Council leader, Councillor Julian Bell and Deputy Mayor, Councillor Harbhajan Kaur Dheer, will attend the Greenford service.

A parade will start from Manor Park and pass through Southall on the way to Southall War Memorial on The Green for a service at 11am before continuing though the town.

The Mayor of Ealing, Councillor Tej Ram Bagha and deputy leader of the council, Councillor Ranjit Dheer are due to attend a service at Ealing War Memorial on Ealing Green, in front of Pitzhanger Manor with a two-minute silence at 11am.

To commemorate the centenary of the start of the First World War, the council is continuing to make repairs and improvements to the war memorials across the borough. Thousands of poppies were also planted this year across the borough as a symbol of the sacrifice made by so many.

Councillor Julian Bell, leader of Ealing Council, said: “The remembrance services give everyone an opportunity to stop and reflect on the people who fought on behalf of this country. When you read about people who sacrificed their lives and hear about the ordeals they went though, it brings the reality of those events to the front of your mind. They are not just names on a wall somewhere; those people are embedded in the history of this country and shall be honoured and remembered with respect.”

Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant for Greater London, Sir David Brewer, will be planting a red acre tree in Walpole Park in commemoration of the borough’s late Deputy Lieutenant, Robert Leader DL, on Tuesday, 11 November.  During his visit, the Lord-Lieutenant will take a tour of the Crossing the Field exhibition in Pitzhanger Manor House and Gallery which examines football’s ability to bring people from all sides of the war together through sport and fraternity
