A new training initiative aimed at reducing electronic waste and supporting unemployed residents is set to launch in Acton next month. Organised by Action West London (AWL), the programme will offer hands-on workshops in electrical repair, using donated household items as training materials.

The first workshop is scheduled in Greenford for Thursday 9 October , and is open to individuals who are currently unemployed or not in education or training. Participants will learn practical skills in troubleshooting and repair, and will work towards a Level 1 certification in repair and PAT testing, a qualification recognised in the electrical safety and maintenance sector.

The workshops will be led by experienced fixers from organisations such as the Fixing Factory, and will focus on small electrical items including kettles, toasters, and lamps. Once repaired, these items will be donated to local charities for redistribution to residents in need.

To support the programme, AWL is encouraging residents to donate broken but repairable electrical items at designated drop-off points in Acton. These include:

  • ReActon (Stirling Road, W3 8DJ) – accepting donations on 27 September, from 12pm to 3pm
  • Act One Cinema (W3 6NA) – open for donations until 5 October, between 11:30am and 10pm
  • Acton Market (W3 9NW) – accepting items until 5 October, from 10am to 4pm

Donors are asked to bag items and include a note describing the fault. The initiative cannot accept phones, laptops, large battery packs, microwaves, televisions, or large white goods.

Gary Buckley, CEO of Action West London, said the programme aims to support both environmental sustainability and social mobility. “By turning unwanted items into training tools, we’re helping people build skills and confidence while reducing waste,” he said.

The workshops marks the start of a wider programme across West London, but organisers emphasise that local donations and participation are key to its success.
