Teenage flautist who studied in Ealing tipped for top

An Ealing teenager has been picked to play for the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain after a rigorous audition process.

17 year old Georgia Brown spent her early school years at North Ealing Primary and Drayton Manor High Schools, before winning a sixth form place at the prestigious Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester, where she is currently studying for A Levels while undertaking advanced instrumental study with teachers including Belinda Gough and Katherine Baker, principal flute of the Hallé Orchestra.

She first started the flute at 8 years old, learning with Stephen O'Regan at Ealing Junior Music School, before later moving on to study with Anna Pope at the Royal Academy of Music Junior Department, where she was an Academy Chimes Wind Prize winner.

She played with the National Children’s Orchestra for three years and in 2014 was invited to become a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, after extensive auditions of over 750 young musicians nationwide, all of them of Grade 8 distinction standard and above. Georgia also spent three happy years playing flute and piccolo with Ealing Youth Orchestra, with whom she enjoyed tours to Frankfurt, Barcelona and Paris, as well as being actively involved in the orchestra's Outreach programme to local schools.

Asked what her most inspiring musical experiences have been, Georgia replied, "I went to see the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela conducted by Gustavo Dudamel at the Proms when I was about 10. I remember watching his hands as he conducted and thinking there was nothing more simple and powerful in the world than the emotion he conveyed through the music."

Georgia gave her first concert with the 163-strong NYO to a packed audience at London's Barbican Centre just after Christmas and says, "Being in the NYO is an amazing experience. The first full rehearsal took my breath away - being part of such a powerful sound is exhilarating. It's so exciting to be surrounded by others who share the same passion for classical music, coming together to really bring it to life."
