Ealing's Chief Executive To Leave

Martin Smith will be replaced in the New Year

Ealing's Chief Executive, Martin Smith is to leave in the New Year to 'pursue other interests'.

He took over the authority's top job from Darra Singh six years ago following a controversial departure from Tower Hamlets council.

Mr Smith, 54, started in local government at 16 and has held senior posts with Redbridge Council and the Lea Valley Park Authority.

He said: “After much soul-searching and reflection, I’ve judged this to be the right time to leave the council to go and try something different, as well as devoting more time to other interests that have taken something of a back seat.

“I've had a great six years here and I expect I could have easily enjoyed another six - it’s a wonderful borough to work for.”

Councillor Julian Bell, leader of the council, said: “Martin’s contribution to the council has been outstanding and I know that he will be missed greatly by staff and fellow councillors. It is easy to excel in times of plenty but true leadership is needed in challenging times and we have been very lucky to have Martin at the helm.

“Martin’s reputation as one of local government’s most respected leaders is well-earned; he has surpassed our very high expectations and excelled as our chief executive. Although I am very sad he is leaving, I wish him every success in the future.”

The council is finalising the details of the recruitment process to appoint a successor.
