Ealing Council joins charity campaign
Ealing Council is adding its support to the homeless charity Shelter’s national campaign to tackle rogue landlords.
The council says it is taking firm action against irresponsible landlords who blight local neighbourhoods and condemn renters to living in rundown, unsafe, or severely overcrowded properties.
Councillor Hitesh Tailor, cabinet member for housing, skills and employment said: “Whilst we have many good landlords in Ealing, we also know there is a small yet significant minority of landlords who trap people in homes which cause misery and, in some cases, put lives at risk. I am determined to stamp out our borough’s rogue landlords, and by joining Shelter’s Evict Rogue Landlords campaign we’re sending a clear message that we do not tolerate irresponsible and negligent landlords in Ealing.”
Campbell Robb, Shelter’s chief executive, said: “We are pleased that Ealing Council is committed to firm action against rogue landlords operating in their borough. We urge other councils to follow Ealing’s lead and do everything in their power to crack down on the worst offenders in their area and stamp out rogue landlords for good.”
The number of Ealing residents moving into private rented accommodation has risen by 63% over ten years.
Councillor Tailor added: “Over a quarter of homes in the borough are now privately rented, more in some parts of the borough including my own ward, East Acton. Building on our housing commission report and our action on outhouses, I am committed to taking robust action to help drive up the quality of private accommodation and root out criminal landlords. I also want residents to know that if they’re struggling with nuisance neighbours, anti-social behaviour or unsafe homes, that we can and will take action.”
