Gove announces 19 new schools for London
Ealing should have a new high school in two years after the Eduction Secretary, Michael Gove, announced a new wave of free schools.
The joint proposal by the London Diocesan Board for Schools (LDBS) and Twyford CE High School will mean a free school in Greenford - on the former site of the GlaxoSmithKline leisure club, in Oldfield Lane North.
Ealing Council had hoped to build a new school here as part of the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme, but when BSF was scrapped the council had to look for new ways to create school places.
This bid has received council backing as well as support in the form of a petition of thousands of signatures of parents, teachers and residents.
The school, will take 240 pupils per year group from ages 11 to 18 and will follow a Christian ethos but has an open admissions policy - meaning anybody can apply regardless of faith.
