Ealing Councillor Takes On New Mountainous Challenge

Liberal Democrat Gary Malcolm will be climbing Ben Nevis in the dark!

Being an Ealing Councillor he's already had to deal with many big challenges and he's (literally) taken on many mountains before, but this time he's doing it in the dark!

In six weeks' time, the Liberal Democrat and Southfield ward Councillor Gary Malcolm is to do a winter climb of the hardest ridge of Ben Nevis in Scotland, through the night, using only ice axes and crampons.

He'll be raising money for a charity, Breast Cancer Haven, who provide care and support for those undergoing treatment.

Councillor Malcolm said: "Normally in the summer it takes 4 hours to climb Ben Nevis, but this will take about 10 hours, and it will be cold, windy and there is a risk of falling off the 80 degree icy ridge. My target is to raise at least £500 so if you can help by donating that would be wonderful.

He was inspired by a friend Catherine Günnewicht who said, "I used Breast Cancer Haven when I was going through my treatment and when the treatment had finished. Cancer affects us all in different ways but often, once the treatment is over, and the physical wounds have healed, the psychological impact can linger on. So it’s a blessing to be able to attend Breast Cancer Haven for various therapies they offer at a time when you need it. Personally, over a year after finishing treatment, I found myself suffering from severe anxiety. Breast Cancer Haven supports those affected by breast cancer and also their families.''
