Free Books For Children

Rail passengers benefit from literary handout

Thousands of children’s books have been given away for free to mark International Children’s Book Day.

The books were available to First Great Western customers at a number of stations across the network, including Ealing, as well as on selected long distance services last Tuesday [2 April].

With over 5,000 books, titles included Creepy Crawlies (with 3D glasses attached), My First Picture Atlas, Hansel and Gretel and Space among others.

FGWs Dan Panes said:

“The Easter period is a great time to take your kids out and about and there is so much to see across the Great Western network and a number of family discounts available.

“But all of us who have children know just how hard it can be to keep them occupied when they have to sit for a short while. We hope these books can help that.

With a range of titles to suit every age group, Igloo Books’ Sales Director Briony Britten said:

“International Children’s Book Day is a great way to remind ourselves of the value of a good book - and how they can be used not only as a teaching or learning tool but also to entertain.

“Compared to a computer game, what can be better than sharing 3D creepy crawlies on your way to a day out, or helping your child to learn to read?”

Since 1967, on or around Hans Christian Andersen’s birthday, International Children’s Book Day is celebrated to inspire a love of reading and to call attention to children’s books.
