More Children in Ealing Are Getting Fatter

And even more youngsters in Acton are overweight

More than a third of children in Ealing are overweight and the problem's even worse in Acton.

According to Ealing Council, 36.7% of 10-11 year olds in the borough are either overweight or obese - and that figure rises to 40.4% in W3.

The most recent survey of primary school pupils found that 12% said they ate a takeaway more than three times a week and 17% said they had been bullied because of their size.

Year five pupils (aged 9-10 years old) from Berrymede Junior, St Vincent’s Catholic Primary School, West Twyford Primary School and West Acton Primary School had the opportunity to put their questions on healthy eating, keeping fit and staying well to a panel of experts at a special health question time on Wednesday, 26 June.

The health question time was designed to bring children together directly with health professionals, give them sound, practical advice on healthy living and correct any confusion or misinformation.

Councillor Jasbir Anand, cabinet member for Children and Families, said: “One of the council’s main health objectives is to increase the number of children who are a healthy weight. “There is a lot of confusion about the best way to eat and live healthily. Events like this help by giving children the space and time to ask questions and be given the most accurate information directly by professionals.”

The children who attended the question time will share their findings from the day with their fellow students through their school councils.
