Going The Distance

Council trying to encourage more people to exercise

In case you were wondering what those wooden blocks appearing in various local parks were - all can now be revealed - they're distance markers.

The markers are spaced at even intervals along pathways in the parks to show users the distance they have walked, jogged or run.

Marker routes are already up in Southall Recreation Ground, North Acton Playing Fields and Lammas, Spikesbridge, Blondin, Pitshanger, Perivale, Ravenor and Southall parks, with more to follow in the coming months.

Leader of Ealing Council, Councillor Julian Bell, who is hoping to take part in the Ealing Half Marathon in September, said: ''The markers are fantastic for people of all fitness levels. From keen runners to those just starting to exercise, the markers can help people measure how far they’ve come. “I hope this will give local people a boost and get them training for this year’s Ealing Half Marathon.''

The implementation of more distance marker routes is part of wider park upgrade works and was approved by Ealing Council’s cabinet in January.
