While numbers of park rangers cut across the borough
At a time when many are coping with pay freezes, cuts or even with losing their jobs, a table of salary bands for Ealing Council employees provides an interesting contrast.
There has been an 18% increase in Ealing Council staff paid over £50,000 in 2008/9 since the last financial year according to the borough's recently published annual accounts. There are now 384 people paid over that figure at the Council.
Furthermore, 16 employees were paid paid over £100,000 (compared to 12 in the previous year).
The Council has been reducing their staff head count in recent months, but the axe appears to have fallen so far on less highly paid employees, like park rangers.
Councillor Gary Malcolm commented: "At a time when many people are being made redundant or having pay freezes it seems odd for the Conservative council to give so much extra money to the high earners at the expense of front-line services.
"Liberal Democrats believe that more money should go to those hard workers such as our park rangers who have suffered recently with cuts and still have to look after about 70 parks across the borough."
A Council spokesman said: “The annual inflationary pay rise, negotiated on behalf of local councils, means that some staff were tipped just over the £50,000 mark.
"The figure also takes into account posts like headteachers. The increased figures for employees earning above £100,000 also relates to annual pay changes."
