Trustees Sought For Local Charity


Volunteers needed for AGEUK Ealing

An appeal has gone out to find trustees for a local charity that works to improve the lives of older people in the borough.

AgeUK Ealing also known as Age Concern Ealing needs more help from volunteers who can work 1-2 days a month.

The general responsibilities of a trustee at AUKE are to:

  • Ensure that the charity complies with its governing rules, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation
  • Ensure that the charity pursues its charitable objects as defined in its governing documents
  • Ensure that the charity applies its resources responsibly, effectively and exclusively to further its aims and objectives
  • Contribute actively to the Board of Trustees’ role of giving firm strategic direction to the organisation, setting overall policy, defining long-term goals and evaluating performance against agreed targets
  • Ensure the effective administration of the charity;
  • Ensure financial stability of the charity;
  • Protect and manage the property of the charity and to ensure proper investment of the charity’s funds
  • Appoint and support the chief officer(s) and monitor the performance of the chief officer(s)
  • Safeguard the good name and values of the charity

Trustees will use any specific knowledge, skills and experience they may have to help the Board agree and make sound decisions.  This will involve scrutinising papers, leading discussions, focusing on key issues and providing advice and guidance requested by the Board on new initiatives or other issues relevant to the area of work of the charity in which the Trustee has special expertise.

Specific responsibilities of a trustee at AUKE are:

  • An ability and willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to being a trustee, including attending regular Board meetings (currently monthly). Note that this is typically the equivalent of 1-2 days per month as and when required, to read relevant papers, respond to emails, and otherwise contribute to the work of the Board
  • To attend meetings (and sub-committee meetings) and read papers in advance of meetings
  • To participate in other tasks as they arise from time to time, such as interviewing or helping with fundraising

Essential or important criteria

Candidates must meet one or more of the following important criteria:

  • Expertise in one or more of: Law (ideally including charity law), PR/marketing, finance, risk management, social enterprise, business development, fundraising, IT. Note that this advert is targeted at potential trustees with legal or marketing experience
  • Expertise in or knowledge of the needs of older people in Ealing and those who support or care for them
  • Understanding of the role of a charity trustee

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of being a charity trustee
  • Experience of operating at a senior level in an organisation (private, public or third sector)
  • Understanding of the specific challenges for, and needs of, older people in Ealing
  • Be living in or near, or be affiliated to, the borough of Ealing

Time commitment: Typically the equivalent of 1-2 days per month, including preparation for and participation in Board meetings (held monthly)
