Crime increases when the clocks get put back
Police will be launching a major campaign next week to raise awareness of crime prevention prior to the clocks going back on Sunday, 25 October; a time of year when typically an increase in burglary is seen.
Following on from last year’s success of the ‘Clocks, Locks & Lights’ initiative in Barnet, an autumn / winter campaign against burglary, police will be launching this year's on Friday, 16 October in Ealing.
Around 165 Ealing officers, supported by volunteers and partner agencies, will aim to deliver crime prevention advice to people across the borough, reaching members of the community who might not otherwise interact with police.
The days will be supported throughout by the London Fire Brigade, London Ambulance, local authorities, housing associations, representatives of Victim Support, drugs workers and other voluntary sector organisations.
Activities will include visits to homes and schools and the setting up of crime prevention stalls in numerous places across all three boroughs at venues including Haven Green in Ealing.
Chief Superintendent Paul Martin, Ealing Borough Commander, said:
“Soon it will be that time of year again when the clocks go back; we all need to review the security of our homes.
Think about the locks on your outer doors - are they secure? Do they need replacing? Should you consider security lights over your front door?
Timer switches are a good deterrent; it makes it appear that someone is at home even when you are not. They don’t need to be in every room but you could interchange them just to make things look different from anyone who may be watching what time you get home.
Your local Safer Neighbourhood Team is always available if you have any concerns or want advice about how to best protect your property.
Having said all that, we strive to make Ealing the safest borough in London and this year we have reduced burglary by 28%, robbery by 58% and motor vehicle crime by 35%.”
