Awards for the borough's gardens and parks

Ealing is celebrating after picking up a bunch of awards at the 2013 London in Bloom ceremony.

The council took home a silver-gilt award in the overall borough category, along with silver-gilt awards for King George’s Playing Fields and Southall Manor House Grounds and a silver award for Three Bridges Park in the small park category. Each entry was assessed against the criteria of community participation, environmental responsibility, horticultural achievement and overall impact.

Ealing also won three discretionary awards; Oldfield allotments in Northolt gained first place the allotments category, Horsenden Hill in Greenford won the meadows award and Ealing’s Transition Network took home third place in the edible garden awards for their work setting up a community orchard garden in an old tennis court in Lammas Park.

The competition is designed to promote gardening, horticulture and biodiversity across London, to make it a greener and cleaner place to live, work and visit.

Councillor Bassam Mahfouz, cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “This is a fantastic accomplishment for Ealing and I congratulate everyone who was involved in the borough’s success in this competition. I hope these awards instill a greater sense of neighbourhood pride in local people and help to encourage everyone to get out and about in our beautiful green spaces.”

Ealing’s entry into the 2013 London in Bloom competition was led by the council’s park ranger team. Entries were judges in July.
