Local Assembly Hears Of High Housing Costs in Borough

demands made for more affordable housing and better rights for renters

A special cross party meeting to discuss the high cost of housing has been held in Ealing.

Around 300 people from local churches, schools and community group plus councillors, council candidates and the local MP attended the Ealing Citizens Housing Accountability Assembly which took place at Twyford CE school in Acton.

The audience heard first hand accounts of people who had experienced living in substandard private accommodation and others who had suffered from insecure tenancies.

The meeting climaxed with a set of asks made including introducing a charter of renters rights, insisting on greater percentages of affordable housing in new developments and committing to community owned land projects in the Crossrail corridor.

Council Leader Julian Bell said they were already some way to fulfilling these and would work towards reaching all the targets. Opposition leader, Greg Stafford said the Conservatives would also be committed to doing the same if they ever regained control of Ealing Council.

Ealing Central and Acton MP, Rupa Huq, promised to work in Parliament to extend the landlord licencing put in place by Ealing Council but stated that Conservative central government had rejected the idea of a wide-scale national rollout.
