Boy electrocuted at Ealing Broadway station

14 year old from Hanwell killed after climbing down onto tracks

14 year old Somalian-born Shakir Hassan Jama from Hanwell, W7 was electrocuted on the tracks at Ealing Broadway station at around quarter past 10 last Thursday evening.

A train driver reported seeing five or six youths climb over a fence onto platform 9. Shakir and one other went down onto the track from the eastern end of the platform. Shakir was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police and the ambulance service attended, the station was closed and a track search undertaken for the missing boy, who was not found. 52 passengers on a west-bound District line train waited for nearly an hour and a half while the search for the second youth was made along the track. Services on sections of the District and Piccadilly lines were suspended for a time. Mainline trains continued to run on caution.

The incident was witnessed by both staff and a number of passengers, who have been interviewed by police. The death is not being treated as suspicious, but as a tragic accident. A full investigation is being carried out for the coroner.

A London Underground spokesman said: "This is a tragic accident and our first thoughts are with the youth's family. We are deeply saddened that someone so young has lost their life in this way.

"Such incidents are extremely rare on London Underground but it clearly shows the dangers of playing on the track. The railway is not a playground and we strongly urge anyone to think twice before doing so."

British Transport Police is appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time to make contact on 0800 40 50 40.
