Tara travel to County Clare

London Senior Camogie League - Broadford (7-3) Tara (3-3)

Tara Camogie Club traveled to Co Clare for the weekend to play a Broadford selection in a friendly game. Broadford have just won the Intermediate Championship and therefore promotion to Senior grade next year.

The weather cleared up nicely by throw-in at 3pm and from the start Broadford were lively. It was clear that their forwards Danielle Sheedy and Deirdre Hayes were very dangerous in their ability and accuracy when they took a couple of early scores.

Soon Tara settled though and started to pass the ball around and it was Ann Gleeson who got Tara’s first score from play, followed by a point from a free. The Tara midfield supplied a great amount of balls into the forward line who piled on the pressure and made it difficult at times for Broadford’s Marie Corcoran and Sarah Skehan to clear their area. The pressure paid off with a well taken goal by Kate O’Dwyer following some class passing and movement.

After the interval, although behind, Tara played with confidence and earned themselves a couple of goals courtesy of Mariee O’Dwyer and Ann Gleeson; both of whom were inspirational for Tara throughout the game. Kate Brennan (London) played her first game on Irish soil and playing alongside Lisa Sherry and Ger Curtin had their fair share of the ball but just couldn’t convert. Catherine Dwyer & Christine O’Malley had the legs in midfield to break up Stephanie Maloney’s fine runs and the Tara backs of Aimee Curtin, Aine Breen, Sheila Fernandes and Eimear O’Connor had a tough job in stopping the deadly duo and then the addition of Ann March. Tara goalie Mags Howard made some fantastic last ditch saves and despite the scoreline looked a thoroughbred goalie. Special guest appearances were made by youngsters Sarah Gleeson of Holycross, Kate O’Dwyer of Cashel; and former Tara player of mid-80’s Christine O’Malley. Final score Broadford 7-3 v 3-3 Tara.

Many thanks to all at Broadford Camogie Club & Danny’s Bar for their hospitality over the weekend. It was great to see so many ex-Tara’s and players relatives out supporting on the day. Special thanks to Tara founder Carmel Dillon for organising the game as a warm-up to Tara’s 20th Anniversary next April. www.camogie.co.uk
