Gurnell Leisure Centre gets a makeover

Disruption likely at local pool and gym

Work which aims to revitalise and modernise Gurnell Leisure Centre in Ealing will commence this month.

Ealing Council and its new leisure partner GLL (Greenwich Leisure Limited) are investing £1.8 million in the facility over the coming two years.

From early December the entire first floor will be refurbished to include a new fitness centre, dedicated male and female dryside changing rooms, a new reception area, a refurbished studio and a café. The work will be carried out in stages to minimise disruption to customers.

Councillor Nigel Sumner, cabinet member for health and community well being, said, “I am delighted that our new partners GLL have been able to start their improvement works so quickly since their contract began in November. Gurnell Leisure Centre is an important facility to this borough and it is well used by our residents. The refurbishment will revitalise and modernise it so that it is better suited to their needs. Inevitably there will be some disruptions to services at the facility during the coming months but we will endeavour to keep these to a minimum and have all core areas open.”

The work will be carried out in the following phases:

Phase 1 – New fitness centre
Work will commence on 11 December with initial works to the new fitness centre. During this period the existing café will close but hot drinks will be provided from a vending machine. The first stage of the fitness centre will be completed in the New Year and will then open as the new extension to the facility.

Phase 2 – Reception and full fitness centre
The existing reception area will be reconfigured and space will be maximised to create a new and modern entry into the centre. The existing gym will then be refurbished and linked to the new fitness centre extension.

Phase 3 – Dryside changing rooms
The existing dryside changing rooms will close and be developed into two separate male and female changing rooms.

Phase 4 – Studio and café
A new café will be developed with internal and external seating areas. The studio will close for a short period as part of this phase of the refurbishment.

Mark Sesnan, managing director of GLL, said: , “I would like to take this opportunity to reassure users that there will be a café in the new facility. It will be located nearer to reception and the studio area and it will offer a range of healthy eating options including hot and cold drinks. The café will also be open for the use of social groups that regularly attend the leisure centre.”
