Ealing Hospital to introduce protected meal-times

Patients recover more quickly when they eat well

In response to feedback from patients and nursing staff, Ealing Hospital will be introducing protected meal times for in-patients from 16 August 2005.

This will mean that during lunch and supper times non-urgent activities on the ward will stop and the nurses, catering staff and volunteers will be able to help serve food and give assistance to patients who may need help eating their food.   This will also help prevent unnecessary interruptions to meal times.

The benefits of protected meal times enable patients to relax and enjoy their meals and ensure that they gain the maximum benefit from eating a healthy and nutritious meal.   Patients can recover much more quickly and maintain a healthier lifestyle.

The agreed protected meal times are:

Lunch: 12.30pm 1.30pm

Supper: 5.30pm 6.30pm

They will be encouraging relatives and visitors to try and visit outside of protected meal times except for those who visit in order to help their relative or friend to eat.

They are also asking medical and other health professionals not to conduct non-urgent care on wards during these times.   This programme will benefit the recovery of our patients and enable nursing and catering staff to provide a much-needed service.
