Eid traffic restrictions in Southall, 21st & 22nd Jan

On Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd January 2005, EID UL ADHA will be celebrated in Southall and Ealing Borough Police have a policing plan to ensure the celebrations are policed efficiently on both days.

Superintendent Laura Nicholson in overall charge of policing events during the celebrations explained

The purpose of our the policing operation and tactics is to ensure the celebration of Eid is safe and peaceful and causes minimum disruption to the community.

In the past some visitors to the area during EID celebrations have caused distress and disruption to the community through the persistent playing of loud music, waving of national flags and sounding of car horns into the early hours. Others have engaged in drunken behaviour, which has led to violence culminating in a number of arrests for drunkenness and public order offences.

We are fortunate on this borough, that generally speaking the community meets the religious and cultural celebrations that take place with tolerance and patience. However, it is very important that the community of Southall are able to carry out their day-to-day activities without unacceptable behaviour and unreasonable disruption.

Therefore, beginning with the celebrations surrounding EID-UL-ADHA, we will implement more stringent policing tactics which will ensure the dignity of all religious occasions celebrated in the Southall area are preserved.

An integral part of Ealing Borough's tactics during EID is our traffic management, which we are currently working in partnership with the London Borough of Ealing to deliver.

We will distribute leaflets to all residents and business premises within the traffic management restricted area outlining the exact road closures and restrictions, which will take effect during the upcoming EID celebrations on 21 st and 22 nd January 2005.

The leaflet will also outline that local residents within the traffic management area will be allowed access to and from the restricted area. However we strongly advise that they carry identification documents and proof of address (i.e. Driving Licence, Utility Bill or Controlled Parking Zone Permit). It will also advise Businesses in the restricted zone are to inform staff of the restrictions and if possible, limit deliveries during this time

Ealing Borough police will also have Urdu and Punjab speaking officers on patrol throughout Eid to assist with any issues or concerns and ensure it is a safe and peaceful time for all in attendance. Ealing Police are urging everyone who is attending the EID celebrations to think safety at all times:

  • Safer Homes - Remember to secure your home before going out
  • Safer Cars Park Smart Remember to park your car in a well-lit area, residential area or secure car park in the area. Please secure your vehicle and do not leave valuables on view in your car.
  • Safer Streets Ensure that valuables including mobile phones are well secured when you are out on the street
