The team behind the painstaking restoration of Boston Manor House has secured a prestigious award.

It has been named as Heritage Project of the Year at this year’s Architectural Journal (AJ) Awards.

The AJ judges described the restoration of Boston Manor House as a ‘tremendous feat’, adding, “The architects did everything they could do, very thoughtfully. There is a modesty and integrity to it all – revealing the layers of history – and a lot of joy. They’ve spent the money where it mattered and with great attention to detail. In all, this project was in the right hands.”

Architects from Purcell renovated the house leading to Historic England removing it from the heritage at-risk register in 2023.

The 400-year-old manor house, situated in Boston Manor Park, Brentford, opened its doors to the public last year and is now open six days a week and free to visit

Hounslow Council secured support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and for the six-year renovation project. The £6 million investment was also supported by the Mayor of London’s Good Growth Fund, Historic England, Historic Houses Foundation, Wolfson Foundation, Pilgrim Trust, and Heritage of London Trust.

Councillor Salman Shaheen, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Public Spaces, at Hounslow Council, said “We’re delighted with this prestigious national award and thank both the team at Purcell, and the AJ for their kind words in recognition of the tremendous effort that’s gone into bringing Boston Manor House back.

“The architect’s experience, creativity and passion for the project created a productive partnership, and an excellent outcome.

“It’s a joy to see the house giving some of the grandiose opulence of years gone by, while also welcoming local people, hosting fun, creative workshops and providing space for local students and an arts organisation to grow and thrive.

“We’re thrilled at the success we’ve made of Boston Manor House and grateful to all our staff and volunteers who help to maintain and breathe life into it every day.”
