For a slow lane trundler like myself can anyone recommend the best swimming baths in the area - including out of Borough within, say, 6 miles of Ealing Broadway?

I was just pointing out that you usually just can't roll up and expect to swim nowadays. You need to investigate and find out when the public swimming times are.

PS to clarify - it becomes two 25m pools at 8.30am when they bring a boom up to split the pool which is why it is only 50m before that time :-)

Gurnell is 50m before 8.30am - I was there this morning and it was lovely with the sun streaming through the windows. I think its a good pool although the changing areas are a little tired
Philippa, the classes use only half the pool, leaving the rest available for individual swimming, except for 10-11 Monday mornings when there's Aqua in one side and school kids in the other. Even then I think one lane was left free last Monday morning.School holidays will put an end to school swim classes over the summer.

http://www.everyoneactive.com/Centre/Acton-Centre/116/TimetablesTimetable for the new pool. This is what I mean by heavily timetabled and this is the just the beginning. We don't have enough 50m pools in this country.
Did they take the wave machine out of Fountains then?(I must confess that it is well over 20 years since I was last there...)

Ah! No, no slide, not in the big pool anyway.

Typo slide not side!

There are diving boards at the deep end; actually, no, not boards so much as platforms, maybe for a quick start for racing? Not sure what you mean by 'a side'.There's also a smaller, trainer, pool which I haven't seen yet.

What's wrong with Gurnell? Much cleaner than Brentford Fountain which was just filthy and in Ealing. Susan does the new Acton pool have diving boards? Or a side or is it just a nice big pool?
The pool at the new Acton gym is lovely. It's huge and, while there may be classes going on at different times of day, there should be space for individual swimming too.
I'm doing an Aquacise class in the new Acton pool on Monday morning and shall report back.

6am? Only in my dreams. More late morning

I always think it depends on how easy the pool is to get to as well and whether you can swim in it at the sort of time that you want to. There always used to be a lot of competition from the different users for pool time. Are you the sort of person who likes to go for a swim at 6 am for instance? 40 length warm up?

Richmond Pools on the Park and has an outdoor pool and garden. Lovely!

Intriguing isn't it that the recommendations are for pools OUTSIDE Ealing?

Phil, I don`t use the pool at Isleworth but do use the gym which is part of the complex and has a good view of the pool , the pool is very light and airy being situated next to Redlees Park , during the middle of the day it never seems too busy and it also has lane swimming . Take a look.

I think you'll find the Isleworth pool quite busyThey spent a load on it 3 or 4 years ago and attract the local community with some really decent offers etc.Never been in but I'm told its a well used facility

I don't think the Acton gym has any slides or wave machines!
Susan Kelly ● 4347d
Thanks to you both for the advice. Perhaps I should have clarified that "best" for me at least, is probably no slides or wave machines....but more clean, safe and relatively quiet.Anyone been to the pool on Twickenham Road Isleworth?

The brand new Everyone Active gym at the old town hall Acton opened its two pools this week. You don't have to join but can pay per swim.http://www.everyoneactive.com/tabid/2003/Default.aspxDon't try calling the number on that page which takes you through to the Southall gym. 08453 890089 works.

The best pools lie just outside Ealing. The Brentford Fountains Leisure Centre (just off Chiswick roundabout) has a really good slide. The nearest wave machine equipped pool is to be found in Windsor.
