Very good butcher

I have started using G.H.Baxter at 336 Greenford Ave. It's convenient for me because it's on the way to Perivale where I sometimes hack around the golf course. I have found all the meat and other products  I have bought there to be very good and a reasonable price. It's just next to the White Hart pub.

There's nothing as good as some Lancs. black pudding with bacon 'n eggs and some bubble 'n squeak imo.

Pretty good black puds from Bury too Tony but the best I've had from that neck of the woods are the ones made at Johnson's Butchers of 273 Hesketh Lane Tarleton Lancs.

Wild rabbits are still too small to be taken at the moment, but most good butchers will get them to order though, as the demand is quite small.London has never been a big consumer of white pudding (saveloys yes). Most of the white pudding I've seen in London are Irish varieties for that market.The best white puddings are from Bury, Lancs or the West Country "Hogs' Puddn'"

We seldom see wild rabbit or white puddings in butcher shops these days. I wonder why?

Literally true - they call it goat!We have bought quite a bit of meat from the Halal butcher near the Post Office in Hanwell.We started off buying chicken for the dog there because it is a lot cheaper than Waitrose but have bought the occassional other item for our own consumption from time to time as well.

Thanks Phil. New season lamb is a treat that comes a few times each year and is worth the waiting and the extra cost. Served with mint sauce and a selection of roasted root vegetables and some new potatoes is nearer heaven than I deserve. Life's good really.

halal butchers sell hogget, but they wouldn't neccesarily know that. They often call it goat.

I wouldn't have a clue if they stock it yet Gerry but you could phone and ask. Lamb is not on my list of favourite meats, I prefer beef,chicken or pork.

Not a lot of marbling on new season lamb Gerry as they haven't had time to build up and distribute the fate reserve.For real flavour try to get a hogget joint. Stronger but takes eating 'sheep' to a whole new level.

Does GH Baxters stock new season lamb yet? If so, I'll moosey along and ask for a well marbled gigot for the family this coming Bank Holiday. Can't resist a juicy leg of new season lamb, with minted new potatoes and roasted parsnips and carrots - yum. Anyone care to join me?
