GPs practices to open longer.

I wonder if our GPs surgery(that's a laugh) will stay open 8am to 8pm 7 days a week? I do wish they'd teach medical doctors that one's health does not stop at 5.30pm each day. What do you think?

We would welcome this.  Many people are not paid for the time that they have to take off work to attend surgeries and hospitals - and this includes the time they have to take off to accompany their children and elderly relatives to these places.  It is also important to try and have continuity of care if you can as we know that there is a disinclination for people to read nowadays and time and the quality of note taking is important.  In other words a doctor who doesn't know you and your problems is more likely to choose a drug that is not best suited to you.

With salaried GP's earning, on average, £44 per hour (based on a 37 hour week) or close to £85000 per year and partners  GP practices earning "significantly more" - 16,000 earn in excess of £100,000 per annum (source: Pulse - the GP's own newsletter) I find it difficult to have sympathy that they are being made to work a little harder.

It's an excellent idea in principle as it will help relieve pressure on A & E as well as being more convenient for people who work during the day. Whether we have the number of GPs required to support it is another matter...
