It isn't so much the use of hydrocarbons but the inefficient use of hydrocarbons.Great strides have been made in small passenger vehicles to reduce particulate output but the 'black smoke' emanating from buses, trucks and vans contributes the majority of the airborne pollution from which we now suffer.Electric vehicles are not the solution either as we still use, largely, hydrocarbon based fuel to generate the electricity on which they run. A real case of nimbyism there simply that the hydrocarbons are not released at point of use simply at point of 'production'.Cycling is great for individual transport for many, not all, but there is, as yet, little practical alternative to the, hopefully more efficient, use of hydrocarbons for mass transportation and moving goods.
